I led design and mechanical engineering of the initial in-home system of products integrating complex electro-mechanical systems through launch, ramp, scale and optimization for roadmap products.
In short stages we built technical teams and an overseas supply chain to support ambitious rapid co-development of HW, FW, SW, Content and Services - in sync with the technology breakthroughs, integrations, funding, and then GTM planning and scaling.
We designed it to hang on the wall, fold and stow when you weren’t using it - and not look like a weight bench. We were in San Francisco, so fitting into tiny apartments was a great place to test our concept.
We designed it to replace the whole weight room at the gym and the expensive trainer.
Smart accessories allow you to load weight with the touch of a button and have gyros to provide motion data for accuracy, form and personalization.
The system leverages a powerful dc-motor and mechanical drivetrain system to deliver adjustability to re-produce all the traditional cable machine movements up to 100 lbs of force per arm or 200 lbs using the smart bar accessory.

Here’s our launch video August 16, 2018 announcing our til-then secret product to the world. We started deliveries in CA and then expanded nationwide by the next Christmas.
I was inspired working directly with our expert coaches getting feedback on the prototype equipment and hardware and coming up with future ideas to make the total home strength workout experience the best it can be.

Tonal was in a great position by the time the Covid-19 pandemic shutdown the world for a year. The coaches, the equipment and the content were working together to make it a great experience and positive habit. While the user data-driven promise to make Tonal better, smarter and more personalized announced dynamic Smart Flex technology to adjust and optimize on every rep.
